Brain Protection and Regeneration at the Cellular Level

Methylene blue, also known as methylthioninium chloride, is a chemical compound widely used as a dye and medication. Often referred to as the "first fully synthetic drug," MB has a rich history of clinical and therapeutic applications.

Benefits of Methylene Blue:

- Enhanced mitochondrial function and ATP synthesis: Boosts energy levels in the body.
- Antioxidant properties: Reduces oxidative stress, protecting cells from damage.
- Neuroprotection: May decrease the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
- Nootropic effects: Improves memory and cognitive functions.
- Microdosing for anti-aging: Promotes skin hydration, accelerates regeneration, and wound healing.
- Potent antioxidant: More powerful than NAC or Coenzyme Q10.

Therapeutic Applications:

1. Aging

Methylene blue improves mitochondrial function, reduces oxidative stress, and supports collagen and elastin production, giving skin a youthful appearance. It is also used to treat psoriasis (study).

2. Depression and mood disorders

MB increases levels of neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, giving it antidepressant potential. However, it should not be combined with other antidepressants. Studies also indicate its effectiveness in regulating anxiety and bipolar disorders (study 1, study 2).

3. Lyme disease and coinfections

Acts as an alternative treatment for patients where antibiotics are ineffective. MB combined with antibiotics has been shown to more effectively combat antibiotic-resistant Lyme disease and Bartonella bacteria (study).

4. Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease

By reducing oxidative stress in the brain, MB may support prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. It is a promising neuroprotective agent for patients with motor and cognitive symptoms (study 1, study 2).

5. Methemoglobinemia

The FDA has approved MB as a treatment for this genetic blood disorder that alters hemoglobin. MB effectively reverses the process, converting iron to its correct form (study).

6. Nail fungus

Studies show that MB combined with LED therapy effectively treats fungal nail infections (study).

Methylene blue is widely used in diagnostics (e.g., staining abnormal cells) and in treating disorders such as methemoglobinemia. In some cases, it is also used to treat malaria and cyanide poisoning. In small doses, it is considered safe, but there are contraindications. It should not be used by individuals taking antidepressants, opioids, or antihistamines, those with G6PD enzyme deficiency, pregnant or breastfeeding women.
